FULTON MISSOURI – The eleventh flight of Missouri Wing's CAP Near Space Program (CAPnSPACE) was the most productive mission in the program's 2 year history.
Cadets, Senior Members, Ground Teams and an Air Crew all participated in preparing, launching, tracking and recovering a “BalloonSat” on July 22, 2006. The launch was from the Elton Hensley Memorial Airport in Fulton MO at 08:40.
The BalloonSat traveled 42 miles southeast from the launch point, reaching an altitude of 92,372 ft before parachuting to a landing 1.5 miles from it's predicted touchdown point after a 2 hour and 20 minute flight.
During the flight, the on-board simplex repeater relayed amateur radio messages 250 miles from Jefferson City Missouri to Vincennes Indiana and 311 miles from Sedalia Missouri to Providence Kentucky. The on-board camera took 166 pictures of Earth from Near Space and also captured an image of a meteor trail. Tracking was accomplished by using GPS data sent from the BalloonSat to the recovery teams on the ground. The aircrew coordinated with the ground teams to find the target from the air. The GPS tracking allowed the recovery teams to drive directly to the touchdown point and the payload was recovered at 11:40 CDT.
A “BalloonSat” is a simulated satellite designed and built by CAP members and launched using High Altitude Weather balloons. The balloon and it's payload ascend to between 90,000 and 110,000 feet before the balloon bursts and the payload returns to Earth via parachute. The region between 65,000 and 325,000 feet is known as Near Space where the air is thinner than on Mars and the temperatures reach -70 degrees and colder. http://www.capnspace.org has more information.

TRACKING AND RECOVERY Tracking the spacecraft The flight is tracked in using APRS (Automatic Position Report System) on laptop computers. The white line is the plot of the predicted flight path. The red line is the near spacecraft's actual flight path.

Program Description The CAP Near Space program is about building and launching Simulated Satellite payloads (“SimSats” or “BalloonSats”) into Near Space, at or above 100,000 feet using High Altitude Balloons as the launch vehicle.
This is an Aerospace Education program that will enable participants to gain knowledge in a wide variety of fields, such Amateur Radio, weather, space science, engineering, program management, telemetry systems, experiment design, cosmic ray studies, atmospheric studies and more.
The program's goal is provide education opportunities and monthly launch, tracking and recovery services for CAP Squadrons,, High Schools, Community colleges, Technical Schools, BSA Venture crews, Amateur Radio Groups and other interested groups.
